Building homes, building community: Our day with Wichita Habitat for Humanity

We spent a day working alongside Wichita Habitat for Humanity volunteers, and honestly, most of us had no idea what we were doing. But that turned out to be exactly the point.

More than just construction

For many of us, it was a first-time experience on a build site.

“The work was more involved than what I thought it would be, but also much more rewarding,” shared Brock Wood, COO. “It warmed my heart that we got to work alongside the future owner of the home.”

That opportunity to meet and work with the future homeowner brought the impact of the day into clear focus. “It felt truly incredible to know that simply volunteering some time out of our day can make someone’s future that much brighter,” said Senior Accountant Joshua Willson. “I grew up in a similar situation, and having a house can create so much stability for anyone.”

Several team members reflected on how Habitat’s approach of empowering both volunteers and future homeowners made the experience both meaningful and manageable. “They took parts of the build that I would not have thought we could help with and made it something we were capable of doing,” said Bookkeeper Grace Smith. “That was a good picture of what they do for the families they help: equipping them with the direction and resources they need to be capable of homeownership.”

Even those unfamiliar with power tools or construction found their footing. “I was nervous about going from an office environment to a construction site,” admitted Ellen Hittle, Senior Accountant. “But with Dana’s guidance, we were all able to complete our assigned tasks. It was very satisfying knowing I could competently use the equipment and help get homeowners into their new homes.”

For Partner Kathy Sparks, the experience left a lasting impression. “Seeing the difference between the before and after—it may not seem like much, but considering we typically sit at a desk most of the day, it was awesome seeing what we could do,” she said. “The families we worked with were so appreciative. Knowing how excited their kids were to have their own rooms really touched my heart. There is so much we take for granted every day.”

The day wasn’t just about construction, it was about connection, contribution, and growth. “It’s a great way to stretch out of your comfort zone and find out what you can really achieve,” said Michelin Lipinski, Administrator and HR Consultant. “It was very rewarding to see the progress we had made and know we were helping someone achieve their dream of home ownership.”

As Kathy summed it up: “It is so incredibly rewarding. No matter the skill level, there was something for everyone. Everyone has a talent, and the staff at Habitat for Humanity are great at helping us find that talent and put it to good use.”

Wichita Habitat for Humanity is making a real difference in our community—one house, one family, and one volunteer day at a time. If you’re thinking about getting involved, we hope you’ll say yes. It’s work that builds much more than homes.

How you can help

Volunteers make Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s work possible, and there are many ways to get involved:

Volunteer on construction sites: Construction volunteers work under the supervision of construction staff and core volunteers to build and rehabilitate homes. No experience necessary.

Support the ReStore: The Wichita Habitat for Humanity ReStore sells new and used home improvement items to the public at discounted prices, with all proceeds benefiting the mission of building homes, communities and hope. You can volunteer by assisting customers, stocking shelves, unloading donations, and creating displays.

Become a core volunteer: Core volunteers are the backbone of the organization, serving at construction sites, at the ReStore, in the office and in the community.

Make a donation: Every contribution helps provide families with safe, affordable housing and the stability that comes with homeownership.
